Whitefriargate THE MATRIX, HULL
This is a live project in development stage with our client Hull City Council for a new centre for learning, making and creativity.The 'The Matrix' is an environment that brings together business support, education and creativity to in one place. It draws upon existing institutions, organisations and intiatives in the city and provides a space where they can interact and create a facility greater than the sum of its parts. Hull University and Hull College will be enabled to work together with some of the creative agencies such as the Freedom Festival, Hull Truck Theatre Company and Hull Dance and cultural institutes such as Ferens Art Gallery and the City Library. The Matrix will have makers spaces, workshops and arts and craft studios, rehearsal space and recording studios, co-working space and business development support hub.
Further to consultation with the clients and an assessment of known demand in the city we have developed the brief for a 2100 sq m facility within a grade 2* Listed 18th century building in the heart of the Old Town. The project is part of a three pronged approach to repurposing Whitefriargate - refer to the Whitefriargate Masterplan and Whitefriargate Shopfront Design.
The project envisages related facilities such as a live venue and cinema but these will be self sustaining bringing in operational partners with experience and know-how necessary for a commercial operation.
