Phil Wren/ Managing Director

My Role

I set up Wren in 2009, delighted that the recession had given me the opportunity finally do something I had always wanted to do. So what I do in the practice is guide, manage, inspire when I am able, encourage, mentor and provide creative leadership - and wash up the cups when it is my turn. I enjoy communcating with clients and getting out and about looking for inspiration and opportunity.

My Past

I have been working in the retail and leisure sectors for over 25 years. Before Wren I was Head of Architecture and Managing Principal of the London office of Douglas Wallace for 3 years. Prior to that I was Head of Retail and Leisure Design at HOK International in London between 2000 and 2006 and before joining HOK I was a Design Director at Fitch London with responsibility for Entertainment Environments. In the 1990's I lived and worked in Germany, initially for Fitch and latterly for Aukett & Heese where I was Design Director.

Why I work in Architecture and Design

I was a den builder as a kid and spent hours building tree houses and secret huts on the hills next to my home - I never shook it off and still get a thrill when I see things emerge from paper to built form - I love the process - must be mad.

What I Love

Apart from working at the drawing board (yes I do have one) and visiting great places and buildings, I love live music, good cinema, digging around music shops, culture of all sorts and swimming in Hampstead Ponds in the summer
